Adding a SIP participant to a healthdirect Video Call

What Video Call platform role do I need: Team Member, Team Admin in a current call

If you are interested in the potential use of this feature please contact us at videocallsupport@healthdirect.org.au.

You can add a SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) participant to a Video Call in both the waiting area and meeting rooms. An example use case would be bridging a Video Call with an organisation's existing video conferencing unit (for example Cisco Webex, Pexip, Polycom, Avaya etc) into a Video Call. This enables the Video Call to connect to the video conference members.

PLEASE NOTE: Calls involving a SIP endpoint are only available on a one to one basis - ie one healthdirect Video Call participant to one SIP endpoint. You cannot have a call with more than one healthdirect Video Call participant and later add a SIP endpoint. SIP connectivity is also not available in group calls or via the “New Group Video Call” option.  See below for connection examples. There is also no availability for a SIP endpoint to call directly into a Video Call clinic.

SIP participants can be invited to a Video Call in various ways:

Connecting a patient to a SIP participant from the Waiting Area

You can invite a patient/client into the clinic waiting area using the clinic link and then connect them to a SIP endpoint from the waiting area dashboard. In this workflow the patient/client is attending via healthdirect Video Call and the service provider is joining the Video Call via SIP endpoint. You do not need to join the call with the patient to connect them in this way.

Go to your SIP enabled clinic waiting area and locate the caller you would like to connect to a SIP participant.

To connect this caller to a SIP endpoint:

  • Click on the 3 dots to the right of the Join button and select Add A SIP Host.
  • Then add the name of the endpoint connecting via SIP and the SIP URI including the domain.
  • Click Add a SIP Host at bottom right to connect the caller to the SIP participant.
  • The caller will then be connected with the SIP endpoint in the Video Call screen.

Invite a SIP participant to the waiting area

SIP - Video Call connection examples

SIP and Video Call connectivity can only have one individual participant with Video Call and one SIP end point connected in an individual Video Call.
If the SIP endpoint is capable of bridging, allowing more than one participant to connect, you can add the same SIP endpoint address to multiple different Video Calls - as long as there is only one Video Call participant in that call.

Examples - please note the addresses in the below scenarios are examples only:

For example, you could have patient 1 waiting in the waiting area and you can select the three dots menu and select "add a sip host" and enter in the sip address, for example 12345@video.health.nsw.gov.au. You could then do the same thing for waiting patient 2 and "add a sip host" to that same address. This would connect both patients to the same sip end point and a 3 way call would occur.

Another example would be to have patient 1 in the waiting area, click the three dots and select "add a sip host". Enter the sip address, for example 12345@video.health.com.au. You can then have a clinician start a New Video Call in the waiting area, open the Call Manager and select "add sip participant" to the same sip end point (12345@video.health.com.au). This would connect the patient, clinician and the sip end point together in a 3 way call.
